Fall Back Into Girl Scouts - A New Troop Season Awaits!

5 Ideas to Keep Planning Girl-Led Girl Scouts shape their experience by asking questions, sharing ideas, and using their imaginations. As a leader, allow girls to take an active role in making decisions and choosing activities, while providing guidance that is appropriate to the age of the girls.  When girls step up and take ownership of their decisions, they develop new skills and grow into empowered, confident leaders. All levels of Girl Scouts can be girl-led! How much responsibility varies based on the age of the girls. It is just as crucial that Daisy Girl Scouts get the chance to lead as it is for Junior Girl Scouts, it is just going to look different. Here are 5 ways troops can incorporate girl-led activities: Hold a Braining Storming Session: To start a brainstorming session, ask the Girl Scouts, “what do you like to do?” Write their answers on a dry erase board or blackboard. Talk with them about how their ideas can be incorporated into the petals or badges they are...

Junior Troop 3305 was very busy this summer! They went to the Montauk Lighthouse to earn Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Lighthouse Badge. “Our historian Henry was extremely informative. The girls learned all about the history of light houses, and even got to hear the automated fog horn because it was foggy that day!” Next, the Troop took a trip to Safety Town to help earn part of their Junior Safety Award pin on bicycle safety. The girls had a great time! Would you like to share what your Troop is doing? Email your photo and brief description of your Troop activity to marketing@gsnc.org . Powered by the Girl Scout Cookie Program: Accomplishing BIG GOALS

“Last cookie season I earned the 4,000 box reward, a trip to Savannah, Georgia. I went over the summer with my mother and had a lot of fun. While there, I visited the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the Gingerbread House, the Savannah Botanical Gardens and all 22 Squares in Savannah. I learned many new facts there too like, Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in the U.S. I had a great time and would love to go back!” - Isabella I. Troop 2185 Isabella has been GSNC’s top seller for 4 years in a row and she’s already set her goal so she can earn the top reward again this year—a trip to Niagara Falls! Will you be joining her? It takes a lot of effort to sell so many boxes of Cookies , but Isabella is a real entrepreneurial G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker and Leader)TM. In 2017 she worked hard with her Leader and Troop Cookie Manager to not only reach her own goals, but to support the Five Skills (Goal Setting, Decision Making, People Skills, Money Management an...

Hosting Your Troop Meetings During the Summer Months

Although it might be cold out now, the weather this past summer was delightful… Brownie Troop #2170, from Island Beach Association, took advantage of the beautiful days and had Troop meetings throughout the summer… They met 5 times and the majority of the meetings were outside. “We were so grateful for the weather and that we had those beautiful Tuesday afternoons.” said Mindi, Co-Leader. The girls played on the playground and utilized games and art activities to get to know each other. They each said something interesting about themselves. This got them smiling and laughing with each other, quickly. We brought to their attention their uniqueness. Sitting at picnic tables that windy day, they learned how to use their resources wisely, using shells as paper weights when the wind picked up. The girls got to use their problem solving skills when they worked together to complete a scavenger hunt at the beach and park. After reading Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Good Deed , we work...

The Golden Girls of Troop 520

Image
Meet the “Golden Girls” of Girl Scout Troop 520 of Girl Scouts of Nassau County. Not only have most of the girls been together since Daisies, but 10 of the 11 girls earned the Gold Award this year— and the 11th is currently waiting for final approval on her completed project. Connie, mother and adult Girl Scout Volunteer, has led her Troop of girls from Girl Scout Daisies into mature Girl Scout Gold Award honorees. “I watched these girls grow up. It’s an amazing commitment on their part — they have stuck with the program since they were in kindergarten. To watch their progress has been an amazing experience,” said Connie, whose daughter, Amanda was one of the recipients. “Most Troops don’t stay together; many groups shrink after the girls enter middle school or high school,” Fratianni-Wysota said. “With high school graduation, tests and getting ready for college, it takes a lot of effort to do this.” Congratulations to Connie and girls on a job well done!
