Volunteer Connections by Girl Scouts of Nassau County

For almost 100 years, Girl Scouts has supported the power of a girl to make a difference in her community through the Gold Award project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is a prestigious honor and highest achievement in Girl Scouting . Girls are given the opportunity to engage with members of their communities to address an issue that they are passionate about. Tonight, Girl Scouts of Nassau County will honor 80 girls with the Gold Award and place them among an elite group of women who continue to make a difference in the world beyond the Girl Scout experience.  Throughout the 2014-2015 Girl Scout year these girls dedicated their time to complete their projects while developing strong community leadership skills and spreading their voice to incite change locally and globally. These extraordinary girls are deserving of the Gold Award honor and we are proud of all their accomplishments throughout this journey. 2016 is the year that marks the 100th Anniversary of the Highest Award in Girl Scouting. Be it called the Golden Eaglet of Merit (1916-1918), Golden Eaglet (1918-1938), First Class (1938-1940), Curved Bar (1940-1963), First Class-again (1963-1980), or the Girl Scout Gold Award (1980-present) it represents the pinnacle of the Girl Scout experience-developing leaders. One thing that has not changed is this award has always been part of a long tradition of recognizing the outstanding achievement of extraordinary girls. Over the course of girls’ projects, the Gold Award has inspired them to share their ideas and passions with their communities to make the world a better place. The biggest transformation for each girl is that her increased confidence in her leadership abilities helps her “Take Flight.” Gold Awardees are seen on High School and college campuses as leaders, who are not afraid to commit to new projects. Through the years, the name of this award has changed, but the concept has remained the same. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It represents time, leadership, creativity, community service and dedication. Tonight, we will come together to honor the 70 Girl Scouts from Nassau County who earned their Girl Scout Gold Award in the 2013-2014 Girl Scout year. These Girl Scouts wove at least 80 hours of community service and advocacy into their busy schedules when they developed their Gold Award "Take Action" projects. Each project addressed an issue that the girl felt was important in her community. The completed project entails identifying an issue, investigating the issue, building a team, creating a plan that contains a sustainable and measurable solution, carrying out the plan and educating and inspiring others to act.
