The Girl Scouts of Nassau County are celebrating independently registered members of Girl Scouts. Being an Independently Registered Girl Scout (IRG) allows girls to be active members of the Girl Scout community while gaining a more flexible Girl Scout experience. This option is especially popular for girls who have many extra-curricular commitments and still wish to participate in their favorite Girl Scout activities. “Independently Registered Girl Scouts are still very involved in the GSNC community,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Executive Director and CEO Donna Ceravolo. “We are very happy that these girls and their families recognize the benefits of being a Girl Scout  even if their schedules are busy or there is a lack of a Troop in their area.” This past year, the GSNC offered more than 200 programs for all Girl Scout members to participate. This summer, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County are sharing their adventures with friends, family and, of course, our very own Flat Juliette. But who is Flat Juliette? Our Flat Juliette project allows Girl Scouts to get to know our amazing founder, Juliette Gordon Low, while having fun and enjoying their summer activities. Girls can create paper “Flat Juliette’s” and take pictures with their new pal to document her travels. So, where will we find Flat Juliette this summer? As a true Girls Scout, she loves to explore, meet new people and, above all, have fun. If you take her with you, make sure to take lots of pictures and send them to your friends and family along with the cut out piece of Flat Juliette. She will continue to travel with them and you’ll be amazed to see where she might end up. 2016 is the year that marks the 100th Anniversary of the Highest Award in Girl Scouting. Be it called the Golden Eaglet of Merit (1916-1918), Golden Eaglet (1918-1938), First Class (1938-1940), Curved Bar (1940-1963), First Class-again (1963-1980), or the Girl Scout Gold Award (1980-present) it represents the pinnacle of the Girl Scout experience-developing leaders. One thing that has not changed is this award has always been part of a long tradition of recognizing the outstanding achievement of extraordinary girls. Over the course of girls’ projects, the Gold Award has inspired them to share their ideas and passions with their communities to make the world a better place. What is Bullying? Bullying – Behavior that is repetitive and done with the intent to harm someone. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose   (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services) . Bullying and cyberbullying has taken center stage in the media. A recent case is a YouTube video of a group of middle school students bullying an elderly bus aid . These videos and scenarios show that bullying comes in many and some unexpected forms.   Discussion Questions With a group of friends and an adult, discuss the following questions.
