What do Girl Scouts really do?

This is a true story shared by one of our Program Specialists. One day a girl asked me, “ What do Girl Scouts really do? ” She said “I know they sell cookies, go camping, make crafts and they do nice things for people. Why do I have to become a member to do any of those things, especially when one of those things is just being what you should be…helpful?” I am not sure if she expected the answer she got, but I do know that she did not want to be convinced or cajoled. This past school year girls from all over Nassau County participated in programs where they explored the barrier islands and dissected dog sharks at the Sports Fishing Alliance Center. Celebrate the Summer in Nassau County

Image
Summer has officially arrived! To celebrate the summer and the great outdoors, here are some great local (Nassau County, Long Island), outdoor places that we love to visit during our Girl Scouts of Nassau County programs: Crossroads Farm at Grossmans – Located in Malverne, Crossroads farm has been the home of some of our Girl Scout Gardening activities. Because they grow a variety of fruits and vegetables for sale, Crossroads Farm at Grossmans will help those Girl Scout Seniors working on their Locavore Badge understand the process of how food gets to the dinner table. Old Bethpage Village Restoration – This has been the site of the of GSNC’s Girls Go the Distance Walkathon and Activity Fair for the last couple of years… with pigs, chickens and more, this is a fun place to bring the kids. Take some time to walk through the village and see how things used to be. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is also the home of the Long Island Fair ! Bailey Arboretum – The l...

Girl Scouting in October!

It’s hard to believe, but Tuesday is the first day of October ! Being Girl Scouts, who are always prepared, prepare yourself for the upcoming month with… Girl Scouting in October. October is National Bullying Prevention Month so talk with the Girl Scouts in your Troop about bullying.   What is it that you consider bullying? How does it make you feel? How can you prevent bullying?   Bullying prevention could become the topic of a Take Action project. October 1 is the first day that Girl Scouts from Nassau County can sell product for the Mags&Munchies Fall Product Program . Through the Mags&Munchies program, Girl Scouts learn skills such as Decision Making, Money Management and Goal Setting.  High School Seniors who intend to complete a Gold Award Project must file their Proposal with Council by October 1 . On October 1 through October 4 , tell us about what you are looking forward to most this upcoming Girl Scout year. You can tell us on Face...
