A Holiday Message from Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC)

Image
During this season, we take time to reflect upon the good things we have, like our Girl Scouts , volunteers , families, and community partners. We hope your holidays will be filled with joy and laughter through the New Year. Happy Holidays from your friends at Girl Scouts of Nassau County!  We’re the Girl Scouts of Nassau County: We’re 23, 000 strong – more than 16,900 girls and 5,100 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™  from Nassau County to change the world. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout Troop, and every year since we’ve honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls.  And with pro...

What an AWSM Opportunity

Image
Did you know that Girls in 10 th and 11 th grades have the opportunity to apply for a summer internship at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in partnership with Advancing Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM)? Those picked for this program work side by side under the mentorship of AWSM Faculty and research a topic of their choice. Hear firsthand from Girl Scout Katie G. as she shares about her experience.   How did you hear about this opportunity? I had originally known only about the regular Feinstein high school internship program, and had no idea a specialized GirlScout opportunity existed until a friend of the family—who happens to be a troop leader—told me about it over summer break. She knew I loved research and thought it would give me a chance to take part in it on a professional level. How did you get to be a part of this program? First, my mom and I attended the open house and information session in October to find out more about the p...

Are You Man Enough?

Happy Father's Day to all of our Girl Scout Dads! Thank you for all you do to make our Girl Scout Experience possible. As we approach Father’s Day this Sunday, we would like to take a moment to honor and celebrate all fathers—especially the fathers and father figures who are involved behind the scenes right here in Nassau County! Through their dedication they exemplify our key values, contribute to the power of Girl Scouts, raise our future entrepreneurs, and teach the value of being a volunteer. Contributing to the Power of Girl Scouts Dads have contributed to the Girl Scouts of Nassau County in innumerable ways. Many men volunteer their time throughout the year to play a role in leading our specialty clubs, council events, troop activities, camping trips, and cookie sales. Through their support, our council has made so many wonderful memories! “It is fantastic to see how the robotics program helps the girls develop confidence and expand the way they think and their willi...

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day!

Image
by girls, FOR GIRLS By Mikaela M. On Tuesday, February 20, Girl Scouts from Nassau County assembled at the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science at Hofstra University for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day! The day started with a presentation on the different fields of engineering and how Hofstra helps students gain positions within companies. We learned that engineering encompasses all fields, in fact, many doctors have roots in engineering. Following the presentation, two female engineers held a forum where they spoke about their experience in the field and at work. They offered two important pieces of advice; math is important, if you don’t like math the chances of you enjoying engineering are slim and that social skills matter. Both women agreed that their social skills helped them rise in their respective companies and that being able to communicate with their team is crucial in technology careers. The final speakers were two engineering professors from Hofstra...

2015 was another very good year for Girl Scouts!

Image
In January, we tried for a record… a cookie dunking record that is! Even though we didn’t break the official record, we had lots of fun and laughs trying. In February, we cheered on our Robotics Teams as they moved to the regional finals! Every March we celebrate Girl Scouts’ Birthday and our Volunteers! This year, we honored 90 amazing volunteers who do so much for our girls at our Adult Recognitions Ceremony! Recognizing those people who give so much to our girls and our community can never be overdone…we’re firm believers in saying “Thank You!” In April, Girls Go the Distance Walkathon focused our attention on fun and fitness and was a great way to bring our girls, their families and friends and members of our community together to share a fun filled day in the outdoors learning about healthy living. Our Annual Meeting in May gave us some new Board Members and the opportunity to consider changes to our Bylaws.   And in May and June we celebrated our girls w...
