If I could name only one thing that girls learn when they’re involved with Girl Scouts, it’s that they become capable of tackling pretty much anything. With the right encouragement, guidance, training, and confidence, they grow into women who lead by example to do great things for the world. There are so many reasons to support Girl Scouts and stand with girls: Girl Scouts is the best leadership experience for girls in the world. Our programs are specifically designed with girls in mind and provide opportunities that they can only get from the preeminent leadership organization for girls. On Tuesday, February 20, Girl Scouts from Nassau County assembled at the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science at Hofstra University for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day! The day started with a presentation on the different fields of engineering and how Hofstra helps students gain positions within companies. We learned that engineering encompasses all fields, in fact, many doctors have roots in engineering. Following the presentation, two female engineers held a forum where they spoke about their experience in the field and at work. They offered two important pieces of advice; math is important, if you don’t like math the chances of you enjoying engineering are slim and that social skills matter. Both women agreed that their social skills helped them rise in their respective companies and that being able to communicate with their team is crucial in technology careers. Thanks to our coaches and mentors, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s robotics teams had a fantastic year! We thank them all for their dedication and for the example they set for the girls. Here are the results of our 2017 – 2018 season: FIRST® LEGO League Junior (Jr. FLL) 6-9 years old: The Magical Bots and The Sassy Hot Dogs attended the SBPLI’s FLL Jr. EXPO, where the girls showcased their LEGO robot design and research. The Magical Bots were awarded the OUTSTANDING TEAMWORK AWARD and The Sassy Hot Dogs were awarded the JOURNEY Award! FIRST® LEGO League (FLL) 9-14 years old: Our five teams this season were the LEGO Lovelies, Smart Cookies, Soaring Rockettes, Tech Time Girls and The Dream Stream Robotics Team! The teams competed in the School Business Partnership of Long Island’s (SBPLI. Inc.) FLL Qualifying Tournaments, where they showcased their LEGO robot design, research and invention. One of the earliest behaviors my parents taught me was to say “please” and “thank you;” continuously reminding myself and my siblings that these were the magic words. After a birthday party, we would write thank you notes to those who came to celebrate with us. On Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, Teacher’s day, and all the other “days” of the year, we would say “thank you” to those who were there for us or supported us by giving cards and homemade gifts. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and April 22 is Leader Appreciation Day which makes it an extra perfect time to say thank you to those Girl Scout volunteers in our lives. Maybe it’s the volunteers who are our cheerleaders, guides, and mentors. Or, that volunteer who helps us build courage, confidence and character. Girls don’t like camping . Our first myth is far from the truth. Girls aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, build a fire, pitch a tent or explore the outdoors and nature. Sixty-two percent of girls said they enjoyed almost all of the outdoor activities they participated in through Girl Scouts , with camping ranking in the top three activities. Girls described camping as “fun.” They enjoy the opportunity to overcome challenges, and the feelings of accomplishment. Girls use this time to build and strengthen social bonds and hang out with friends. Girls will get bored at camp . This is not the case at all; finding the time to fit in all your favorite activities is actually the problem. Taking a break from technology might scare some girls… and the volunteers who agreed to take them to the woods. Including the girls in the planning will keep them enthusiastic and engaged.
