Girl Scout Dads Step Up to Help Daughters’ Get the Girl Scout Experience Garden City, NY (June 12, 2014) – The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) are gearing up for Father’s Day by reminding the community that Girl Scout volunteering is not just for moms. Girl Scouting would not be possible for many girls throughout Nassau County if it were not for the many fathers who volunteer to be Troop Leaders , Girl Scout Cookie volunteers or members for the GSNC governance process. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2013 report , nearly 60 percent of American families with children under 18 have a double income household, so it’s no surprise that some Troops are led by mothers and some by fathers. Through the years, the name of this award has changed, but the concept has remained the same. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It represents time, leadership, creativity, community service and dedication. Tonight, we will come together to honor the 70 Girl Scouts from Nassau County who earned their Girl Scout Gold Award in the 2013-2014 Girl Scout year. These Girl Scouts wove at least 80 hours of community service and advocacy into their busy schedules when they developed their Gold Award "Take Action" projects. Each project addressed an issue that the girl felt was important in her community. The completed project entails identifying an issue, investigating the issue, building a team, creating a plan that contains a sustainable and measurable solution, carrying out the plan and educating and inspiring others to act.
