My Experience as an Intern for GSNC

Image
Back in May, I started interning with Girl Scouts of Nassau County in the Marketing department. From day one, I knew that the environment that I would be working in for the next few months would make for an extremely rewarding internship. Working with GSNC’s Marketing Department, I have been able to really expand my knowledge of what a marketing department might be responsible for, especially in a small business environment. In addition to doing communications and public relations outreach, I have been learning quite a bit about different software that can be used in both marketing and in graphic design. I have learned to work with multiple programs such as InDesign and Photoshop alongside programs for web management such as Contribute. My tasks included a wide variety of things such as helping to organize and prepare for the 2013 Gold Award, creating blog posts, photography at Camp Blue Bay, along with other administrative tasks around the office. All of these tasks, no matte...

Spending the Day at Oktoberfest

Image
When I was younger, I always remembered my mom, Troop leaders and other volunteers talking about their times at GSNC’s Oktoberfest weekend—the different themes each year, the camping and the weekend away. They always had fond memories and new skills to bring back to the Troop. I had always wanted to go! Last October, after Oktoberfest took a year hiatus, I was finally able to experience Oktoberfest for myself. Because I was puppy-sitting, I was only able to go for the day, but when I arrived, there was non-stop chatter about the night before. There was anticipation in the air; both girls (because now older girls can attend Oktoberfest… not the case when I was a girl) and adults alike were excited to spend the weekend in tents with their friends, eating camp food and learning new and different skills that would   be offered through the many workshops that day. Last year’s theme was Harry Potter, so some people were dressed in costume ready for their time at Hogwar...

National Sisters Day is August 4

Image
Did you know that there is a whole day dedicated to sisters?   Even though we love and celebrate our sisters all year long, August 4 is National Sisters Day… so why not go an extra step to really celebrate the friendship and bond between sisters, including our Girl Scout Sisters! Here are some ideas of ways to celebrate National Sisters Day: Pick up the phone … call your sister and say “Hi” to her and wish her a Happy Sisters Day. Make a homemade card or write a letter … Let your inner creativity shine by breaking out the magic markers and sparkles and making your sister a card. You can take it one step further by writing her a letter telling her why you appreciate her. Get together with your Sister and watch old home videos or look through old pictures… This is a great way to remember the history that you and your sister share and to look back on some of your favorite memories together. Spend the day together creating new memories … whether it’s jus...

Girl Scouting in August!

It’s hard to believe, but Thursday starts August! Being Girl Scouts, who are always prepared, prepare yourself for the upcoming month with… Girl Scouting in August.    August 4 th celebrate National Sisters' Day by sending out cards to your closest friends and Girl Scout sisters. Consider having your Cadettes, Seniors or Ambassadors form friendships with younger Girl Scouts by having them teach the art of friendship bracelet making. In the end, the girls can trade their friendship bracelets as a way to show their bonds!   Additionally, encourage your girls to make new friends this year, which will earn them their “Make New Friends” fun patch. Remember, just as Vi, the Daisy flower friend teaches us, be a sister to every Girl Scout.  Talk to your Cadettes about exploring the world of financial literacy and math skills involved in the home décor and fashion industries at our program Designer Division, Stylish Subtraction, and Fashionable Fractions . From August...

Girl Scout Juniors Participate in Music Meets Science

Image
This week, Girl Scout Juniors have been exploring fun ways to interact with music and sound. Using wireless tablets and laptops, girls have been creating, recording, manipulating and synthesizing sounds, to create their own songs, remix and sound collages.  Today is the last day of the program and tonight the girls will be presenting their music creations to their friends and families.   Thank girls for making the GSNC Service Center so musical and Good Luck tonight!
