Volunteer Connections by Girl Scouts of Nassau County

Last night was an exciting night for those Girl Scouts who sold 500 boxes or more of Girl Scout Cookies.   Donna Ceravolo and the Entrepreneurial Programs staff at GSNC hosted a dessert reception at Seasons 52 in Garden City, New York.   All Girl Scouts in attendance received specialty patches representing their sales of 500 or more boxes. The girls who sold over 1000 boxes will be going on a twilight dinner cruise of New York harbor.  The girls who sold over 2000 b oxes also received a tablet computer for their efforts. Operation Cookie Send-off #2 Last week, those Girl Scouts who sold at least 100 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for Operation Cookie celebrated at the Marine Base on Stewart Avenue in Garden City with a special send-off of Cookies going to local New York National Guard and Military Reserve units (those who helped during Super Storm Sandy).   We were greeted by Sergeant Moreno and other members of the team at the Marine Base.   She told the girls about the work that goes on at that location.   We were joined by representatives from our Operation Cookie partners, DHL Global, who assisted in sending Cookies to other locations.   (We could not have Operation Cookie without DHL!) Hooray for DHL! A BIG HOORAY and THANK YOU to the many Girl Scouts who go the extra miles to make Operation Cookie a major feature of their own Cookie Program efforts! Some girls ask customers to just add one more box for the soldiers when they take orders or at their booth sales. ...

Here I am Signing Some "Cookie Checks" This past Friday and Monday I spent several hours signing the checks that go to our Girl Scout Troops as their proceeds for participation in the Girl Scout Cookie Program.   Each check gets signed by two real people -- not a machine.   By my best guesstimate, I signed about 450 checks ... I write a personal note on the checks that I sign that are in excess of $600 ...   But since I don't sign every check,   there are some of the larger checks that do not get a note from me.   (Sorry!)    ...   There is really nothing magical about $600, it was just the threshold that I chose for my notes. I enjoy signing the "Cookie Checks" for many reasons ... Girl Scouts from Nassau County meet Helena Williams, President of the Long Island Railroad! By Olivia Sabino, Guest Blogger   Hi! My name is Olivia and I am a Junior in the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Media Girl Unit.    On April 29, with a bunch of other Media Girls, I had the opportunity to meet the President of the Long Island Railroad.   Her name was Helena E. Williams.   Ms. Williams told us all about how she ended up as the President of the LIRR (she always found trains interesting). She even told us that she once was a Girl Scout too!!!   Ms. Williams started her career as a lawyer.   She then moved onto work for Long Island Bus, where she worked in many different positions before she ended up as the President. After Long Island Bus, Ms. Williams moved onto work for the Long Island Railroad. Her past experience with buses helped her become the first female President of Long Island Railroad. June 2013 is going to be her 6th year...

Memorial Day is not just the unofficial start of the summer, but a day for us to honor and remember those men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military.   The third line of the Girl Scout Promise states “…to serve God and my Country...” Memorial Day is a great day, for us as Girl Scouts, to remember others who have served our country. How do we do this? This year, Memorial Day is Monday, May 27!  Start out the day by participating in your community’s Memorial Day Parade… Wave your flags high and march forward with honor wearing your Girl Scout Uniform. If you are looking for a flag, the GSNC Resource Room usually has some flags for loan, but get there early otherwise they may not have anything left.  If your town has a monument to those who served, have your Troop make wreathes and hold a ceremony to place those wreathes at the monument or simply take a Troop trip to that monument to reflect and respect those who served. Summer may not be here yet, but it will be here soon.   Now is the time to start thinking about and planning what you are going to do this summer with your Girl Scouts. Are you going to take a trip to the beach, plan a BBQ (maybe to work on your Junior Simple Meal badge or the Ambassador Dinner Party badge ), play some sports or work in the Garden?
