Happy Birthday Juliette Gordon Low!

Image
"I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!" Girl Scouts across the USA and around the world will celebrate Juliette Gordon Low's birthday on October 31...the 152nd anniversary of her birth.   And as Girl Scouts of the USA celebrates our 100th Anniversary as an organization, it is easy math to see that Juliette Gordon Low started this organization when some other women in her era and her social status might have been looking forward to slowing down a bit...rather than becoming the founder of a national organization whose impact for girls and women would be felt around the world! Here's a quiz to see how well you know your history facts about the amazing Juliette Gordon Low: 1.   Where was Mrs. Low when she decided to start the Girl Scouts?   How many girls were in that first Troop? 2.   How old was Mrs. Low when she began the Girl Scouts? ...

Anatomy of a Girl Scout Troop Meeting By Guest Blogger, Cassie Rowan

Image
Back when I was working on my Silver Award (10 years ago), three of my Girl Scout friends and I decided we wanted to impact younger girls in our community by bringing them the joy of Girl Scouting. We decided we would run a Daisy Troop. Being new to the Girl Scout Leader world, the thought of running an hour long troop meeting was daunting.  We were wondering what we would do with 10 Daisies for a whole hour. Now, most seasoned Girl Scout leaders know that there are many components that go into a Girl Scout meeting because the meeting isn’t all just fun and games; there is also Troop business that needs to be attended to like troop dues and troop decisions, but to us “new” leaders we weren’t sure what needed to be included. My Girl Scout Leader taught my friends and me what it meant to be a leader and all the components which should be included in a Girl Scout Troop Meeting.  It is important that girls learn about the Girl Scout Promise and Law, while building courage, conf...

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Hispanic Latino Task Force By Guest Blogger Rhonda Nieves

Image
I am a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Hispanic/ Latino Task Force. I want to tell you why I belong and encourage others to join me in this work. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Hispanic Latino Task Force is the definition of hope to Latina girls.  The opportunities are limitless and helps to cultivate confidence and character in the young Latina woman.  Girl Scouts helps youth to identify and cope with everyday challenges such as peer pressure and bullying. Girl Scouting provides and promotes guidance through the educational system as well as career development.  The Latino Task Force breaks down barriers for average Latina girls, and allows them to be themselves and execute their talent and skills. As a Latina Girl Scout, I have learned how to become independent despite challenges I may have faced in middle and high school.  From participating in workshops about believing in yourself to learning table etiquette and public speaking, to getting to ...

Why Girl Scouts?

Image
Why Girl Scouts? Why not sports or music or dance or a nice nap on the couch after school? The reason is simple. Girl Scouts is the only place that you can do some very cool things. (And, for those girls and families who wish to do more, being a Girl Scout still allows time for sports, music, religious school, play dates and naps!) In Girl Scouting you have common values, found in the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Lots of organizations have value systems, but ours is inclusive of any girl who wants to join regardless of her talent, skills, ability to pay or her own faith or cultural heritage. Girls Scouts have the Girl Scout Leadership Experience where they Discover, Connect and Take Action. Our Journey curriculums allow girls to forge their paths through relationships, our environment and storytelling. Badges and awards teach girls practical skills and allow them to reach high and try things that they have not tried before. The Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards demonstrate a girl's s...

Bullying for Power By Guest Blogger, Eliza Zipper

Image
When it comes to bullying - power, authority, and leadership are very different.  In response to the now viral video of bus monitor Karen Klein being tormented by students on the bus, many have criticized the students for having no respect for authority.  They did however, have too much respect for power. There is one student who leads the torments in the video.  He calls her names, threatens her, makes inappropriate physical contact, and revels in the adoration each cruel act receives from his peers.  The other students join in, attempting to share some of his power.  Throughout the video, we hope for Ms. Klein to take back her power.  We want her to stop the bus or call for assistance, but she never does.  As the adult, she is the natural authority figure in this situation.  However, like many other targets of bullying, she appears powerless.  This is one of the biggest tolls of bullying, that it strips targets and bystanders of t...

Summer is Here!

Image
One Girl Scout year is winding down, as another is about to begin in full force. While Association Award Events ended their course as of June 25, Day Camp is   just beginning, and the first Residence Campers at Blue Bay will arrive next week! At the Girl Scout Service Center staff are preparing for short-term summer programs for girls that will be delivered at various locations. Some Troop and groups will continue to meet over the summer, and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chorus -- on the heels of their successful performances in June in Washington, DC and Niagara Falls -- has July gigs on Fox and Friends, a national TV morning show, on Independence Day and with the NY Mets at Citifield on July 7 . We bid a fond and happy retirement to Pat Amoroso after 15 years of staff service. We welcome summer interns and we are already planning for a new staffing delivery system that will be ready to roll in September, in conjunction with our heightened focus on our Str...
