National Young Women Of Distinction

Every year GSUSA selects ten exceptionally inspiring Girl Scout Gold Award recipients as National Young Women of Distinction (NYWOD). This honor is given to Girl Scouts whose Gold Award projects demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and sustainable impact, and addressed a local challenge related to a national and/or global issue. These young women are taking matters into their own hands, generating much-needed change and serve as incredible examples of what it means to be a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker and Leader.)™

Let’s wish them the best of luck! GSUSA releases the honorees on July 1, 2017. Great News: GSUSA recently received a generous $1 million pledge from Susan Bulkeley Butler to provide academic scholarships for NYWOD over the next 10 years, this year through 2026, honorees will each receive $10,000, in addition to $5,000 from the Kappa Delta Foundation, which is once again contributing.

With some many Girl Scout spending their summer outdoors and at camp, now is the perfect time to talk about sit-upons... a great item to bring on any outdoor adventure . So, when we were challenged to make a sit-upon, we decided to do what Girl Scouts do and use our resources wisely... so, we used some items that we had on hand. Here is what we came up with: Supplies needed : Scissors Already read newspaper Reusable shopping bag Duct tape (we used gold glitter duct tape of course, but an type of duct tape will do) Instructions: Cut the sewed seams of the reusable shopping bag.  Lay the reusable bag out flat (waterproof/plastic side down) and place the newspaper on one half of the laid out bag as shown.  Fold the other side of the bag over the newspaper so that the newspaper is sandwiched between the two sides of the reusable shopping bag. Making sure that we have achieved the global component of our Gold Award is important, but it is often the most neglected piece our project.
