It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow starts June! Being Girl Scouts, who are always prepared, prepare yourself for the upcoming month with… Girl Scouting in June. 

June 1st marks the first day of Great Outdoors Month, so be sure to take your girls outside to learn a little more about our environment. For instance, your Juniors may work towards their Camper Badge, or your Cadettes may want to work towards their Trees Legacy Badge. This month, the possibilities are endless to learn more about the Great Outdoors.

Additionally, June 1st marks the first day of National Safety Month. Teach and practice keeping your girls safe and provide them the skills and techniques that they may need to keep themselves safe in the future.

This June 11th is Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Gold Award ceremony. Take this day to teach you girls a little more about each of the awards that they can achieve through hard work and dedication as a Girl Scout. The awards the girls should be aiming for are Bronze, Silver, and of course, Gold. Encourage them to continue to push forward to reach the highest achievement in Girl Scouting!

June 14-16th is Junior Jammin Weekend over at Camp Blue Bay. Troops will participate in a variety of fun and exciting activities to keep them going all weekend long! Encourage your Juniors to join in on this fun weekend of new experiences with the opportunity to meet other Girl Scouts from all over Nassau County!  (There is still room.)

June 16th is Father's Day! This might be a good time to have your girls work with their dads on things such as woodworking, car care, or even another opportunity to go camping! Those are just a few ideas on how to get your girls and their dads to work on Girl Scouting activities together. 

June 21st is everyone’s favorite day, the first day of summer! There are so many possibilities for activities for the summer time in the Girl Scouts! Take the time to teach your girls about the weather changes, flowers, camping, and so much more! Summer is the perfect time to be outdoors and work on projects that you were unable to achieve in the cold winter months, so take advantage… maybe even work towards your Sum-more Girl Scouting Patch!  (And follow our Girl Scouts of Nassau County Boards on Pinterest for lots of summer ideas for girls to do together, and/or home with family. Here's one for the out of doors!)

June 23rd is this month’s full moon. Use this night to take your girls out star gazing! Certainly learn a little bit about our sky and its interesting changes that it goes through each month. This will help educate Scouts of all ages, but may benefit our Senior Scouts with earning their Sky Legacy Badge.

With some many Girl Scout spending their summer outdoors and at camp, now is the perfect time to talk about sit-upons... a great item to bring on any outdoor adventure . So, when we were challenged to make a sit-upon, we decided to do what Girl Scouts do and use our resources wisely... so, we used some items that we had on hand. Here is what we came up with: Supplies needed : Scissors Already read newspaper Reusable shopping bag Duct tape (we used gold glitter duct tape of course, but an type of duct tape will do) Instructions: Cut the sewed seams of the reusable shopping bag.  Lay the reusable bag out flat (waterproof/plastic side down) and place the newspaper on one half of the laid out bag as shown.  Fold the other side of the bag over the newspaper so that the newspaper is sandwiched between the two sides of the reusable shopping bag. How are others affected but this issue? How are they working to solve this problem? Making sure that we have achieved the global component of our Gold Award is important, but it is often the most neglected piece our project.
