GSNC's Centennial Celebration of Girl Scouting

Approximately six years after the first Girl Scouts blazed the trail of redefining what was possible for themselves, the first official Girl Scout troop in Nassau County was established circa 1918. Girl Scouts of Nassau County will be honoring this amazing milestone by celebrating all that Girl Scouts can do throughout the 2018-2019 year.

The celebration begins with the ever-popular Bowling Bash, kicking off the new Girl Scout year, as well as the Mags & Munchies program. It is a time for girls to make new friends and reconnect with their current friends, after having the summer off.

To continue the celebration, GSNC is partnering with the NY Jets! We are able to offer discounted tickets and other incentives to our Girl Scout families and friends for the October 14, 2018 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Neighboring Councils have also been invited to join us. We can’t wait to show the NY Jets the power of the Girl Scout spirit!

We also created our “Man Enough to be a Girl Scout”campaign. We are encouraging our dads and other positive adult male figures in our girls’ lives to become official members of the Girl Scout family. By joining, they have access to exclusive “Man Enough” attire and other perks.

As we move into the 2019 year, our Girl Scout families will be able to participate in World Thinking Day, our Cookie Kickoff, National S’mores Day and a wide variety of activities such as our Pen Pal Program, 100 Stories Program, the Savannah Speedway Showcase, our Family Appreciation Day, and our Council’s community service challenge. This, combined with over 100 events featured in our Possibilities Program and Event Guide will surely make for an action-packed year of challenging and exciting adventures.

To culminate the year, we will be holding “Forever a Girl Scout Campfire.” This will be an opportunity for all Girl Scouts of Nassau County and their families to gather for one large campfire, complete with traditional songs, storytelling, and appreciate the bond that has made Girl Scouts of Nassau County the success it has been for 100 years.

With some many Girl Scout spending their summer outdoors and at camp, now is the perfect time to talk about sit-upons... a great item to bring on any outdoor adventure . So, when we were challenged to make a sit-upon, we decided to do what Girl Scouts do and use our resources wisely... so, we used some items that we had on hand. Here is what we came up with: Supplies needed : Scissors Already read newspaper Reusable shopping bag Duct tape (we used gold glitter duct tape of course, but an type of duct tape will do) Instructions: Cut the sewed seams of the reusable shopping bag.  Lay the reusable bag out flat (waterproof/plastic side down) and place the newspaper on one half of the laid out bag as shown.  Fold the other side of the bag over the newspaper so that the newspaper is sandwiched between the two sides of the reusable shopping bag. Working at a Girl Scout Camp by Maggie Robinson

Of all the different first jobs a young person could have, summer camp counselor is simply the best. Other regular jobs won’t leave a young person with as well-rounded a skill set as summer camp and in my (incredibly-biased) opinion, being a Girl Scout summer camp counselor is even better for introducing young minds to the workforce. Growing up I had two dreams: become a world famous best-selling author and be a Unit Leader at Camp Blue Bay. Thanks to my experience working at summer camp, I’ve already been able to achieve one of my lifelong goals! (And as soon as I finish my novel, I’ll complete the other one…)  It all started 15 years ago. I was 8 years old and enjoying the sleepaway experience at Camp Blue Bay for the very first time, but my camp counselors were an enigma to me.
